People with unforeseen debilitating illnesses may need extensive durable medical equipment (DME) at some point during their lives. Our Medical Equipment Center (MEC) contains primarily used and donated equipment, providing a good temporary source of equipment. There is no charge for this equipment and you may use it as long as it is needed. Because the MEC inventory is constantly changing, we are not able to provide an accurate list on this site of what is available for loan.
The Medical Equipment Center’s normal operating hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Although there is no charge for use of medical equipment, the Newport News Scottish Rite Foundation does accept tax deductible contributions. If you have questions concerning our charities, please contact the Newport News Scottish Rite Office at 757-599-6617.
HISTORY: The Newport News Scottish Rite Medical Center was established in the early 90’s through the extraordinary efforts of Ill Brother Edward Lowry 33°. Brother Lowry, along with several other members of the Scottish Rite, purchased materials and subsequently built the Medical Equipment Center. Brother Lowry promoted and solicited equipment, i.e. Hospital beds, wheel chairs, walkers, port-a-potties etc and personally issued medical equipment to needy individuals in the community without regard for compensation. Although Brother Lowry now resides with our Lord, his legacy lives on.
The Scottish Rite Medical Equipment Center has evolved as a well-known Community Outreach Program under the direction of the Newport News Scottish Rite Foundation Inc, providing equipment to hundreds of people yearly. The Center is staffed by volunteers who receive no compensation for their services and all medical equipment is issued to those in need at no cost.
